Where Is Ghulkin Village?
Ghulkin is a small yet vibrant mountain village in Gojal, surrounded by dramatic landscapes:
- Ghulkin Glacier on one side
- Shishper Glacier on the other
- Gulmit nearby
- The majestic Hunza River flowing along its boundary
Unlike many tourist destinations located directly on the Karakoram Highway, Ghulkin lies slightly off the main road. This geographical advantage has protected it from mass tourism, noise pollution, and over-commercialization, preserving its natural purity and traditional lifestyle.
The Origin & History of Ghulkin
The name “Ghulkin” is derived from the Wakhi word “Ghulk,” meaning a well or water storage space. Local history suggests that more than a thousand years ago, the area was a vast lake. When viewed from above, the village still resembles a bowl—open on just one side.
According to oral tradition, early settlers, lacking proper tools, used animal horns to carve out an outlet so the water could escape. This allowed the land to dry and become habitable. Today, that ancient effort stands as a symbol of determination and survival.
Community, Education & Human Development
Ghulkin has approximately 250 households, though many residents work in major Pakistani cities and abroad. Despite its small size, the village has made education a top priority, resulting in an impressive literacy rate.
The village has:
- A Government primary school
- A secondary school established by Aga Khan Education Service Pakistan under the Aga Khan Development Network
- A purpose-built English medium school constructed by the community
These institutions have produced engineers, doctors, IT professionals, and entrepreneurs serving across Pakistan and internationally. Ghulkin is a powerful example of community-led education development in Hunza.
Agriculture & Local Economy
Historically, Ghulkin was famous for producing some of the best quality potatoes in Hunza, which remained its primary cash crop until the late 2000s. Today, the local economy has diversified:
- Tourism and hospitality
- Online businesses and IT services
- Jobs in metropolitan cities
- Small enterprises
The village also operates a community library and a high-tech IT center, enabling youth to earn through remote work and digital platforms.
Women Empowerment & Vocational Skills
Ghulkin promotes women’s economic participation through its vocational center, where women weave carpets and produce traditional handicrafts. This contributes to household income while preserving cultural heritage.
Microfinance – A National Model
Following the arrival of the Aga Khan Rural Support Programme in the late 1970s and early 1980s, microfinance was introduced in the region. The Ghulkin microfinance system became a model that was later replicated across Pakistan, influencing modern microfinance banking structures in the country.
Pioneer in Nature Conservation & Sustainable Tourism
Ghulkin is among the pioneers of community-based conservation in Pakistan. Conservation initiatives have led to:
- Growth in endangered wildlife populations
- Revenue from regulated trophy hunting permits
- Development projects funded through conservation income
The village practices responsible and eco-friendly tourism, ensuring that visitor activities align with environmental protection.
Top Tourist Attractions in Ghulkin
Ghulkin offers breathtaking trekking routes, glaciers, meadows, and high-altitude lakes, making it one of the best eco-tourism destinations in Hunza:
- Borith Lake
- Patundas Meadow
- Patundas Glacier
- Jurav
- Talingshi
- Luzdur
- Ghulkin Ghaar
Patundas Meadow,
Patundas Meadow was traditionally used as a summer pasture by the people of Ghulkin. During the summer months, villagers would take their livestock to this high-altitude meadow, as their agricultural lands in the village were fully cultivated with crops.
It is with great pride that we mention Mr. Zafar Iqbal, who has been guiding for more than four decades. He was among the first to introduce this route to foreign trekkers. Today, Patundas Meadow has become one of the most popular trekking destinations among international visitors.in particular, is popular among European hikers and adventure tourists.
Unlike commercial tourist hubs, Ghulkin promotes home-based guesthouses run by local families—supporting community tourism and authentic cultural experiences.
“Mud Over Concrete” – A Sustainable Architecture Campaign
In a unique environmental campaign, Ghulkin launched the “Mud Over Concrete” initiative, where volunteers and scouts covered concrete buildings with traditional mud plaster. This method:
- Maintains natural temperature control
- Keeps homes warm in winter and cool in summer
- Preserves cultural architecture
- Reduces carbon footprint
The campaign received national and international media appreciation. Community members—from children to elders—actively participated.
Climate Change & Glacier Melting
Despite having a minimal carbon footprint, Ghulkin is severely impacted by climate change in Gilgit-Baltistan.
Ghulkin Glacier is melting rapidly. What was once just a few feet below the moraine has now receded nearly 100 feet. This glacier supplies irrigation water to both Ghulkin and Borith fields.
The community seeks global support for:
- Glacier grafting projects
- Artificial glacier pyramids (successfully implemented in regions like Ladakh and Baltistan)
- Water supply solutions for barren lands
Renewable Energy Needs
Like many remote villages in Upper Hunza, Ghulkin faces severe electricity shortages—sometimes receiving only 8 hours of electricity per day, and at times none for weeks.
The community urgently needs:
- Solar power systems
- Solar street lights
- Wind energy solutions
- Support from donor agencies and development partners
These renewable energy initiatives would strengthen Ghulkin’s position as Pakistan’s leading eco-tourism village.
Tree Plantation & Environmental Protection
Every year, locals organize tree plantation drives independently and in coordination with international organizations working on Glacier Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF) awareness. This reinforces their commitment to sustainable tourism, climate action, and green development in Hunza.
