Best Three Days Trek to Patundas Meadow

Tucked high in the majestic mountains of Hunza, Patundas Meadow is one of the most underrated trekking destinations in northern Pakistan. This alpine jewel, nestled between two massive glaciers, Passu and Batura, is often called the “Table of Mountains” for good reason. It’s a place where nature unveils its raw beauty, and every step of the trek offers breathtaking scenery, solitude, and the thrill of high-altitude adventure. But what truly makes Patundas a trekker’s paradise is not just the meadow itself, but the incredible journey it takes to reach there.

It’s the perfect balance of remoteness, beauty, and challenge that sets Patundas apart. Unlike the more commercial trails in Pakistan, this trek offers solitude and raw nature, from icy glaciers to green meadows, from steep ascents to peaceful camps. The ability to see eight prominent peaks, cross glaciers, hike through untouched valleys, and experience authentic local hospitality makes this journey unforgettable.

For trekkers seeking a unique adventure in Pakistan’s north, Patundas is a hidden gem waiting to be discovered, a true paradise above the clouds.

The Journey Begins: From Islamabad to Hunza

Like many great adventures in the north, the Patundas trek begins with a scenic drive from Islamabad to Hunza, a road that winds through lush valleys, towering peaks, and cultural landmarks. After arriving in Hunza, the road leads further north until you reach Borith Lake, a peaceful alpine setting where the group settles in for the night resting in preparation for the adventure ahead.

Borith Lake is the base point for the Patundas trek. Along the way, there’s a delightful stop at Kuk for traditional snacks, a local gem tucked away among the rocky landscapes.

First day Trek: Borith to Luzdur via Passu Glacier

The next morning, a short drive brings trekkers to Zero Point (3,300 meters) — the official start of the 3-day trek to Patundas. From here, the path leads through Kuk for a quick snack break before the most thrilling part of the day: the crossing of Passu White Glacier. It’s a challenging yet unforgettable experience, as you step across a living, breathing mass of ancient ice under the shadow of towering peaks.

After the glacier, the trail gradually climbs toward Luzdur (3,660 meters). Here, the team sets up camp for the night, surrounded by dramatic landscapes and silence only the mountains can offer. With no phone signal, no rush, and no distractions. it’s the perfect place to disconnect from the world and reconnect with nature.

Second Day Trek: The Steep Climb to Patundas

On the second day of the trek, the real magic begins. The path from Luzdur to Patundas Meadow (4,100 meters) is steep, requiring focus and stamina, but the views make every step worth it. As you climb higher, the Passu Glacier stretches far below, and Passu Peak rises proudly to your side.

When you finally reach Patundas, it feels like stepping onto another planet. A wide, flat meadow sits peacefully between two mighty glaciers, Passu on one side, Batura on the other. The landscape is wide and surreal, offering a 360° view of the surrounding peaks. On a clear day, you can spot eight iconic mountains, each telling a story of its own.

That afternoon, a short hike takes you to the base camp of Passu Peak, nestled below towering ice walls and jagged peaks, the base camp lies in a rugged, serene setting, surrounded by the raw beauty of the Karakoram, which leaves a lasting impression… The glacier itself stretches out like a frozen river, its crevasses and shimmering blue ice offering a dramatic contrast to the lush green of the meadows above. From this vantage point, the enormity and splendor of the glacier become truly apparent, making the journey to Patundas not just a physical trek but a deeply awe-inspiring experience.

At night, you can choose to camp in tents under a starry sky or stay in traditional shepherds’ huts, adding to the authenticity of the experience.

Third Day Trek: The Descent to Borith and Beyond

As all beautiful journeys must come to an end, the final day begins with an early morning descent from Patundas back to Luzdur, retracing your steps across the majestic Passu Glacier. After another peaceful pause in Kuk, the group makes its way down to Borith Lake, a tranquil high-altitude lake nestled amidst dramatic mountain scenery. Surrounded towering peaks, Borith offers a peaceful setting to relax and reflect. It’s also a haven for birdwatchers, especially during migration seasons when flocks of ducks and other birds grace the calm waters. Here, with a warm meal and the crisp mountain air, your Patundas adventure gently winds down in the embrace of nature’s serenity.

What Precautionary Measures should be taken;

Trekking to Patundas Meadow involves high-altitude hiking, glacier crossings, and camping in remote areas, so taking the right precautionary measures is essential for both safety and enjoyment. Here’s is some key precautionary steps;

  • Physical Preparation
    Trekking to Patundas Meadow requires a good level of physical fitness due to the steep ascents, high altitude, and glacier crossings. To prepare your body, it’s recommended to start light training at least 2 to 3 weeks before the trek. Activities such as daily walking, hiking on local trails, stair climbing, and basic cardio exercises can greatly improve stamina and endurance. Additionally, spending a few days at moderate altitudes like Hunza or Borith Lake before beginning the actual trek is crucial for acclimatization, helping your body gradually adjust to the thinner air and reducing the risk of altitude sickness.
  • Altitude Awareness
  • At high elevations like Patundas, altitude sickness can affect anyone, regardless of fitness level. It’s important to recognize early signs of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) such as headache, nausea, dizziness, and fatigue and to inform your guide immediately if symptoms appear. Staying well-hydrated is one of the best ways to prevent AMS, so drink water consistently, even if you’re not thirsty. Follow the rule of “climb high, sleep low” by ascending slowly and allowing your body to adjust each day, which significantly reduces the risk of altitude-related issueS.
  • Trekking & Glacier Safety
  • When trekking to Patundas Meadow, especially across challenging sections like the Passu Glacier, proper gear is essential for both comfort and safety. Wearing high-ankle, waterproof hiking boots with strong grip is crucial, as the terrain includes rocky paths, loose gravel, and slippery glacier surfaces. These boots provide ankle support and protect your feet from moisture and cold. Additionally, trekking poles are highly recommended they help maintain balance during steep climbs and descents, reduce pressure on your knees, and offer extra stability when navigating across the uneven and icy sections of the trail. With the right equipment, your trek becomes not only safer but far more enjoyable.
  • Packing Essentials
    The weather in high-altitude areas like Patundas can shift rapidly, so layered clothing is key, pack moisture-wicking base layers, an insulating fleece, a down jacket for warmth, and a waterproof outer shell, along with gloves and a warm hat. A well-stocked first aid kit is equally important and should include personal medications. Don’t forget sun protection sunglasses to combat snow glare, high-SPF sunscreen, and lip balm will protect your skin from the intense UV rays at higher altitudes.
  • Sustainable & Responsible Trekking
    Trekking responsibly in Patundas means leaving the environment as untouched as you found it. Always carry your waste back or dispose of it in designated areas, and opt for biodegradable toiletries to reduce your environmental impact. Respect the local culture and traditions by dressing modestly, keeping noise levels low, and avoiding any disturbance to wildlife or sacred sites. Supporting local communities is also vital — hire local guides and porters, buy from small businesses, and show appreciation to the people who welcome you into their homeland.
  • Communication & Emergency Preparedness
    Before heading out on the Patundas trek, it’s essential to inform a friend, family member, or your tour operator about your itinerary, including expected locations and return dates, in case of any unforeseen situations. Since mobile signals can be weak or non-existent in remote areas, carry emergency contact tools like a satellite phone, walkie-talkie, or a local SIM card with partial coverage. These tools ensure that help can be reached quickly if needed, offering an added layer of safety and peace of mind throughout the journey.

Review on Patundas trek by a client

A long time ago, shortly after the Karakoram Highway was built, I travelled through the Hunza Valley. I always hoped to come back some day and explore this area more. Fortunately, work took me recently to northern Pakistan and I was able to visit the upper Hunza valley. I trekked to the Passu glacier, Patundas Meadow and the Passu Peak base camp. This was a wonderful trek. The terrain that we crossed was varied, mostly in the arid zone, but sometimes also in the cedars, then finally in the alpine zone. We hiked along glacier moraines, crossed the Passu glacier and hiked the ridge above Patundas Meadows. Everywhere the views were breathtaking. The locals call it Patundas table, because the meadow is flat and provides a true 360-degree panorama. Some preparation is required to visit the area, organising the porters and food. My thanks go to Black Glacier Tours for excellently preparing and carrying out my tour and for making this trip so unforgettable. Joseph Kaelin
